In a world of AI-generated flyers and content that looks just a little too perfect—with the occasional extra finger thrown in—aren’t I better off posting something genuine, even if it’s “bad”?
This is a hard balance. On one side, you have polished AI content that is becoming increasingly easy to recognize and increasingly common in our feeds (and increasingly easy to ignore, but that’s a different post). On the other, you have the temptation to grab your phone, turn on the front-facing camera, go live, and talk to the internet, unfiltered.
There is a place somewhere in the middle. Your business can be genuine without being thoughtless.
Authentic Doesn’t Mean Unfiltered
People want to see the people behind a business. Show your face. Show your employees. Show us the new shipment that just arrived, the mess behind the scenes before a big event or the thing that made everyone in the office laugh that morning.
That kind of content makes your business feel human. But your business page is still your business page.
It isn’t your teenage Facebook profile where sticking your tongue out and throwing up a questionable hand gesture was somehow an indication of how cute and fun you were. What you post is part of how customers, potential customers, employees and your community experience your business.
Be yourself—but be the version of yourself you want representing your business.
Curate, Don’t Manufacture
There is a difference between curated and fake.
Curation is simply choosing what is appropriate to share. It is taking the picture from a better angle. Checking what’s in the background before you post it. Reading your caption one more time. Using proper grammar. Thinking about whether the joke you’re making is appropriate coming from your business.
You don’t need professional photography for every post. You don’t need a graphic designer to announce that the tomatoes came in this morning. You don’t need a fully scripted video with a ring light and one of those tiny microphones clipped to your shirt every time you want to talk to your customers. And you certainly don’t need to turn every thought into an AI-generated flyer.
Sometimes a good photo and two genuine sentences are exactly what you need. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s intentionality.
Remember Who Can See It
One of the easiest things to forget about social media is just how public it is. You may be talking to your regular customers when you make a post, but they aren’t necessarily the only people who will see it. Posts get shared. Screenshots get taken. A joke intended for 300 followers can suddenly find an audience you never expected far beyond your local community.
There are people who will argue that all attention is good attention in marketing. I don’t agree.
Going viral because people love what your business is doing is great. Going viral because thousands of people are passing around a screenshot of something you wish you hadn’t posted is something else entirely. Your business’s reputation is worth protecting.
And unless your personal profile is locked down like Fort Knox, remember that customers can probably find that, too.
Before You Hit Post
Social media should feel more human. Especially now. Use your face. Use your voice. Let people see some personality. Take the imperfect photo. Tell the funny story. Just be intentional about it.
Main Street marketing, done right.
Until next time,
Alice
